Sturo Art
Turburam Sandagdorj, known as STuro, is a Mongolian-American silhouette fine artist and sculptor based in Reno, Nevada. Born in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia into a family of artists, he mastered the traditional art of paper cutting—called “Tsagasun Baru” in Mongolian—earning the nickname “the man with the magic scissors.” With over 30 years of experience, STuro creates intricate silhouettes from black paper using only scissors, celebrating Mongolian heritage, nature, and mythology through his “living shadows.” He holds Master’s degrees in Ceramics from Mongolian State University of Arts and Culture and Art and Design from Mongolian State Pedagogical University.
After immigrating to the U.S. 20 years ago, STuro has exhibited in over 40 exhibitions worldwide including Mongolia, Japan, Norway, France, Sweden, and the United States. He recently translated his paper-cutting technique to large-scale metal sculpture for Burning Man, contributing to “Wild Horses of the American West” (2022), “Spirit of the Healing Siren” (2023), and “The Silence of TENGRI” (2024). His work has been featured on PBS’s ARTEFFECTS and displayed at venues including Lacis Museum, Oakland International Airport, and the Reno Tahoe International Art Show.
