Metaphysical & Richie Panelli
Michael Russell, known as Metaphysical (or “Meta” for short), is a founding member of Element, Reno’s longest-standing hip-hop collective formed in 1993. A conscious hip-hop artist who transcends labels and genres, Metaphysical has been a cornerstone of Reno’s underground rap scene for over three decades. His straightforward rhyming style and strong lyrical content focus on everyday concepts like love and life, with themes that weave together social awareness and personal philosophy. He famously received a clock from Public Enemy’s Flavor Flav and has been a regular fixture at Reno’s historic hip-hop open mics, including the legendary Tuesday nights at the Green Room.
Metaphysical released his first commercial solo album, “The Art Department,” at Burning Man and has continued to champion unity in Reno’s diverse hip-hop community. Known for his anti-mainstream approach and dedication to conscious rap, he bridges different styles and perspectives within the local scene. His track “Auras” captures his introspective approach with lyrics exploring the thin lines between love and hate, making him one of Reno’s most respected underground voices.
