Luke Rizzotto
Luke Rizzotto is a digital media artist, musician, designer, and educator whose work examines memory, nostalgia, and yearning as it relates to place and travel through the creation of unreal landscapes and spaces. Originally from the New Orleans, Louisiana area, he currently resides and works in Reno, Nevada. He graduated in 2019 from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette with a BFA and in 2024 from the University of Nevada, Reno with a MFA. He has been recognized as a Resident Artist at Le Germinal in Newport, Québec in 2024 and with the Friends of Black Rock-High Rock and Bureau of Land Management in Gerlach, Nevada in 2023.
He has recently exhibited at the Holland Project in Reno, Nevada, Solarpunk Surf Club in Lexington, Kentucky, New Media Contemporary in Dallas, Texas, Plexus Projects in Brooklyn, New York, and the Cookhouse Gallery at the Chelsea College of Arts in London, United Kingdom.
Along for the Ride
Along for the Ride explores the Eternal Sunset Experiential Area, an unreal landscape made of 3D computer geometry and illuminated by a procedural abstract sunset. Slowly, the projection progresses through an amalgamation of mountainscapes, all derived from real mountains and places that are meaningful to me in some way but made surreal by their placement, appearing as a single cohesive landscape and silhouetted against the ever-golden sky. For me, the times when driving at night in a completely new space — not really being able to see my surroundings but certainly able to see impending mountain forms against the dark sky — are the most poetic when travelling. Despite, or maybe because of, the seeming lack of visual information, I am able to enter a liminal mindspace where I feel both comforted and domineered by these mysterious landforms. It is this experience that sits at the heart of Along for the Ride, placing the viewer in a mysterious landscape under a hypnagogic sky, traveling through eternally, just like the sunset.
